| On July 20, 2009, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs approved $160,600.00 in funding for a joint research program conducted by University of Guelph's Department of Environmental Biology and EcoSpace Engineering Ltd. The research project is conducted under leadership of Dr. Youbin Zheng, Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph, Department of Environmental Biology.
In March, 2009, Dr. Mike Dixon, the Director of University of Guelph’s Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility and Ivan Milin, the President of EcoSpace, agreed to collaborate on a joint three stage research project for Recycling Organic Waste using Insect Larvae - the MILINATOR Technology.
In stage one, a bench scale MILINATOR prototype will be built at the University’s Arkell Research Station in Guelph, Ontario. Manure from egg layer chickens will be processed by MILINATOR Technology. Laboratory analyses will be performed on the incoming substrate, on the finished products, and at intermediary phases of the process.
The organic fertilizer produced by the process will be tested on different plants and compared under different conditions. The fly larvae and pupae will be fed to egg layer chickens and the production and quality of eggs will be compared to the eggs produced using commercially available protein food additives.
The scientific data generated from stage one will be used to both approve the use and sale of organic fertilizer, as well as the use of larvae and pupae as livestock feed. This scientific data will also be used for evaluating the positive environmental impact of MILINATOR Technology and thus paving the way for obtaining Carbon Credits.

Dr. Zheng has many years experience in organic horticulture research in Canada, England, Japan and China.
